Position: Music Director - Full-year, part-time position

Position type: Part-time approx. 15 hours / week in 2024

  • Future growth in subsequent years potentially to 20 hours (or more) per week

Salary: Up to $30/hour (pay will be commensurate with education and experience)

Accountable to: Senior Pastor

Purpose: To serve Bethany Lutheran Church by developing, coordinating and managing an effective and well-rounded music program and providing leadership to and supervision of staff members and volunteers involved in this ministry.

The purpose of Bethany’s music ministry is to proclaim the Gospel and glorify God through:

Celebration: To enhance worship for the congregation contributing to its Spiritual life through leadership in worship ---hymns, liturgy, anthems, and solos both vocal and instrumental.

Education: To enrich the lives of Bethany congregants and the community through music with a variety of musical presentations.

Involvement: To seek to grow the music ministry of Bethany by involving the congregation and identifying opportunities to expand the musical offerings.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in music or equivalent sacred music director experience (5 years minimum)

The Director of Music should:

  • Practice personal disciplines of the Christian faith and communicate that faith through witness, example, and programming within a Lutheran congregation (LCMS).
  • Be a strong leader possessing a passion for traditional worship with a love for choral and instrumental music and hymns in traditional and varied styles.
  • Have a vision for building musical excellence through a comprehensive music ministry. 
  • Have the knowledge and skill to conduct vocalists, choirs (adult and children), and instrumentalists. 
  • Have a demonstrated knowledge of sacred and contemporary music repertoire and the liturgical year, ideally with knowledge of Lutheran worship and liturgy.
  • Have strong verbal, written, and presentation communication skills.
  • Have strong interpersonal relationship skills with adults and youth fostering openness, inclusiveness cooperation.
  • Possess the attributes of confidentiality, integrity, and honesty.
  • Have the ability to sit and stand for long periods of time.
  • Be able to reach, grasp, feel, hear, and see up close and from afar.
  • Be able to use basic office computer hardware and peripherals, with or without reasonable accommodation.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Oversee and direct all aspects of the music ministry to include developing, recruiting, planning, rehearsing, and conducting/leading Bethany’s choir(s), and handbell choir.
  2. Plan, organize and lead the ministry of music working in concert with the pastor to develop and coordinate music for worship following Lutheran theology and the church calendar. Recommend and incorporate worship service music that supports sermon series themes, liturgical seasons, and special events. 
  3. Participate in weekly worship services and all church holiday-related worship services.
  4. Supervise the organist and other musicians.
  5. Encourage and recruit members of the congregation to offer their musical gifts in the service of Christ and the church in a variety of ways and to cultivate the musical gifts of all participants.
  6. Encourage and lead the choirs to present occasional larger choral works for seasonal and special occasions (Christmas and Easter).
  7. Encourage and participate in the development of other musical activities as a means of Christian fellowship and congregational outreach.
  8. Train choirs in choral techniques and appreciation of sacred music and train the handbell choirs in ringing techniques. 
  9. Recruit volunteers for special music (instrument and vocal) to be used on occasion.
  10. Schedule guest musicians.

  12. Plan and oversee the budget for the music ministry program.
  13. Purchase music in accordance with budget guidelines applicable for the choir and respective seasons of the year. Music expenditures shall be reported to the church treasurer and not to exceed the amount provided in the church budget.
  14. Prepare appropriate music for weddings and special services, such as funerals.
  15. Develop and supervise the maintenance of the music library.
  16. Maintain church’s adherence to copyright laws and licensure, including keeping the church’s licenses current and recording music performed in the appropriate database(s).
  17. Supervise the maintenance of musical instruments, including handbells.
  18. Cooperate with the Senior Pastor by performing any other duties when asked to do so.
